Manager of Volunteer Resources

This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer. The role starts at $25-$30 per hour, depending on experience.

The Manager of Volunteer Resources provides leadership for Food Bank of Alaska’s volunteer program, including recruitment, training, scheduling, supervision, tracking and recognition. This position works cross-functionally with departments across the organization to ensure volunteers are meaningfully engaged and effectively integrated into Food Bank of Alaska’s programs, operations and special events. 

Essential Job Duties
  • Provide leadership, management, and overall supervision for Food Bank of Alaska’s volunteer programs.
    1. Recruit volunteers as needed for warehouse, office, program and special event tasks.
    2. Coordinate with Food Bank of Alaska staff regarding volunteer tasks, priorities, set-up, and breakdown of volunteer workspaces.
    3. Provide volunteer planning, supervision and/or coordination at special events, including Thanksgiving Blessing, CANstruction and other community engagement or fundraising events as needed.
    4. Provide weekly hands-on training and supervision to teams of 5-16+ volunteers in the warehouse.
    5. Collaborate with programs and operations departments to identify new volunteer opportunities.
    6. Develop and improve policies and procedures for volunteer activities to maximize impact, efficiency, and volunteer experience.
    7. Orient volunteers to Food Bank of Alaska and its mission.
    8. Generate and ensure delivery of appropriate thank-you content for volunteers.
    9. Plan and organize appropriate volunteer recognition activities.
  • Manage the volunteer database and volunteer information.
  • Track volunteer hours, including individual volunteer hours and aggregate hours.
  • Update and maintain appropriate written volunteer procedures, including confidentiality agreements.
  • Work closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and development team members to support the annual department planning process.
  • Collaborate with programs and operations departments to plan and execute adjustments to volunteering efforts as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Communications on volunteer-related communications, including the monthly volunteer newsletter, social media content, volunteer stories, and messaging.
  • Supervise volunteer resources staff, including the part-time Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with volunteers, program participants, partners, donors and Food Bank of Alaska staff while providing excellent customer service and maintaining a hospitality-first approach.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

  • Act as an integral member of the development team in planning, coordination and support efforts that foster a strong culture of philanthropy, entrepreneurship and innovation within the organization.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of two years of experience in volunteer engagement, volunteer leadership, staff supervision, or a related field.
  • Willingness to work weekly in a warehouse environment, including hands-on activities such as sorting produce and other donated food.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings.
  • Strong initiative to implement projects and improve current processes.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to develop creative solutions to problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to explain tasks clearly, coordinate with multiple teams, and build positive relationships with volunteers, staff, and community partners.
  • Familiarity with basic office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases.
  • Experience with volunteer management databases, such as CERVIS, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to safely perform tasks involving heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license and clean driving record.
