Volunteer Coordinator
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for daily recruitment, training and supervision of Food Bank of Alaska volunteers, volunteer supervision at special events, and scheduling, tracking, and appreciating volunteers. The person in this position also coordinates food drives, including community-wide food drives, with support from the Food Donation Coordinator. This position works closely with the Operations Department as well as with the Food Programs Department.
- Recruit volunteers as needed for warehouse, office and program tasks. Provide daily hands-on training and supervision to volunteers. Coordinate with the Warehouse Manager and Logistics Manager regarding volunteer tasks and priorities as well as setup and break down of volunteer work space. Coordinate with office staff to determine need for, and supervision of, office volunteers. Provide volunteer supervision and coordination at special events, such as Blessing, as requested. Plan volunteer opportunities, as practical, to engage the community.
- Support our partner agencies and programs as needed with training and volunteer recruitment to meet program needs. Ensure coordination with Food Programs on questions that affect food safety and distribution. Orient volunteers to Food Bank of Alaska and its mission and invite volunteers to be further involved as donors or advocates. Generate timely thank-you’s to volunteers and organize appropriate volunteer recognition activities.
- Coordinate community-wide and small food drives, supported by the Food Donation Coordinator with logistics and Ceres record-keeping. This includes large food drives, such as CANstruction and Scouting for Food, among others. Ensure appropriate recognition and appreciation of food drives.
- Maintain an ongoing schedule of volunteers. Manage the volunteer database and volunteer information. Track volunteer hours, including individual volunteer hours as well as aggregate hours. Update and maintain appropriate written volunteer procedures, including a confidentiality agreement.
- Provide excellent customer service at all times to volunteers and supporters conducting food drives.

Qualifications

Minimum two years of volunteer experience with significant responsibility or one year of experience supervising volunteers

Willingness to work in a warehouse environment and participate in hands on tasks that may involve dirt or produce, such as bagging potatoes

Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evening hours (average two per week) and at least one weekend per month

High energy, strong initiative, and readiness to step in wherever needed

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to break down and explain complex tasks

Familiarity with basic office software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases

Ability to safely lift and carry up to 40 pounds

Valid Alaska driver’s license and clean driving record
