Cara Durr serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Food Bank of Alaska, bringing more than a decade of experience in advocacy, public policy, and nonprofit leadership. With a deep commitment to ending hunger, she leads the organization in its mission to ensure that no Alaskan has to wonder where their next meal will come from.
Cara joined Food Bank of Alaska in 2012 as Alaska Food Coalition Manager before becoming Chief of Advocacy and Public Policy in 2015. In this role, she led statewide policy initiatives, built collaborative partnerships, and secured millions of dollars in funding to strengthen Alaska’s anti-hunger network. Under her leadership, Food Bank of Alaska advanced key initiatives, including:
- Advocacy campaigns resulting in increased investments in hunger relief efforts statewide
- A comprehensive study examining Alaska’s food security network and the individuals it serves
- The development of an award-winning SNAP Outreach texting platform, increasing access to food assistance
A respected leader in the field, Cara represents Food Bank of Alaska in state and national conversations on food security. She has served on the Governing Board of the Alaska Food Policy Council, the State of Alaska Food Strategy Task Force Member, and as Vice Chair of Feeding America’s Policy Engagement and Advocacy Committee.
In recognition of her leadership and impact, Cara was named one of Alaska Journal of Commerce’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2018.
Originally from Talkeetna, Alaska, Cara holds a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Wyoming, a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Foraker Group. She lives in Anchorage with her partner, Steve, and their two sons.
