Carrs Safeway Launches $20 SNAP Produce Match

Food and nutrition insecurity has risen to alarming rates across Alaska, and Carrs Safeway is helping answer the challenge with additional benefits and services for SNAP customers.

Today, Carrs Safeway is launching new online and in-store benefits for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients at all its stores in Alaska. This is the latest innovation in the company’s on-going efforts to ensure equity and access to food for those experiencing food insecurity. Carrs Safeway is doubling the benefits SNAP recipients use to buy fresh or frozen produce.  When shoppers buy $20 of qualifying fruits and vegetables, they will now receive a coupon for $20 of free produce for their next shopping trip. The match is funded by the company’s foundation and will be offered until May 31, 2024.  Carrs Safeway is partnering with the Food Bank of Alaska to bring awareness to the offering for SNAP users statewide.

“Food insecurity is a problem that will require multiple sectors to solve,” said Brad Street, Carrs Safeway’s Division President, “Food banks can’t do it alone, and we think grocery stores are an essential partner in solving this issue. One of the ways the grocery industry can help is to make using SNAP more convenient, with programs like Produce Match to help them stretch their budget to afford more of the nutritious foods they want to include in their diet.”

Safeway also offers a digital option that include easy payment for SNAP customers using their EBT cards, online ordering via Safeway.com, and free Drive Up and Go™ services for easy pickup of groceries. SNAP users can also now access their online accounts to see their SNAP benefits, track eligible products while they shop, and see where their dollars are going.
