Manager of Volunteer Resources


This position offers some opportunity for limited hybrid set up (i.e. work from home). As this role does entail some evening hours to accommodate on site volunteer events, there will also be moderate flexibility for the person hired in this role to schedule activities in order to accommodate weekly work life balance needs

The Manager of Volunteer Resources is responsible for daily recruitment, training and supervision of Food Bank of Alaska volunteers, volunteer supervision at special events, and scheduling, tracking, and appreciating volunteers.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position which reports to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, pay range $22 – $24 DOE. To apply send resume and cover letter to jobs@foodbankofalaska.org

Essential Job Duties:

  • Recruit volunteers as needed for warehouse, office, and program tasks. Coordinate with FBA staff regarding volunteer tasks and priorities as well as setup and break down of volunteer workspace. Provide volunteer supervision and coordination at special events, such as Thanksgiving Blessing and CANstruction, as requested.
  • Provide weekly hands-on training and supervision to teams of 5-16+ volunteers in the warehouse.
  • Orient volunteers to Food Bank of Alaska and its mission. Generate timely thank-yous to volunteers and organize appropriate volunteer recognition activities.
  • Work with Programs and Operations Departments to identify new volunteer opportunities.
  • Develop improved policies and procedures for volunteer activities to maximize impact and efficiency.
  • Manage the volunteer database and volunteer information. Track volunteer hours, including individual volunteer hours as well as aggregate hours. Update and maintain appropriate written volunteer procedures, including a confidentiality agreement.
  • Communicate with volunteers monthly via email newsletter. Interview volunteers about their experience as an FBA volunteer.
  • Manage a part-time Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers, clients, partners, donors, FBA staff, and provide excellent customer service to stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred two years’ experience as a volunteer with significant responsibility and/or one year of experience in volunteer supervision and/or two years of supervisory experience. Equivalent crew or team management in similar work environment also considered.
  • Willingness to work in a warehouse environment weekly and engage in activities that can be messy – sorting produce, for example.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings.
  • Strong initiative to implement projects and improve current processes. Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to pose creative solutions to problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to break down and explain complicated tasks, coordinate with multiple teams, build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with basic office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases.
  • Ability to safely perform tasks involving heavy lifting up to 50 pounds. 
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license and clean driving record.
